what’s spinning: Amy Winehouse

image

I'm thoroughly hooked on Back to Black, the newest release by Amy Winehouse.
She has a sultry Portishead meets The Supremes sound that is stinkingly fresh yet vintage at the same time. This gem is sure to be on heavy rotation in the studio.

what’s spinning: Feist

image

The first thing I did this morning was open my mail which included this new CD by Leslie Feist. I'm loving it. It seems very appropriate background music while I rush to finish up the last wave of Mother Day's gifts. I'd better hit the workbench.

what’s spinning: The Black Angels

image

It's been raining angrily in Western Iowa now for two days and The Black Angels' album Passover is helping me keep my head above the water and on my work. This moody, low-fi, fuzzy collection is one of my favorites from last year and today it is the perfect sonic compliment to the beautifully gray view of the city from my studio windows.
I'm sure the lawyer's offices above and below love the rhythmic THUMP.

missed opportunity

image

Last month I had the opportunity to see Modest Mouse in concert
but I reluctantly passed (I was in desperate need of sleep, the show was on a Sunday night, the following week was going to be exceptionally brutal, etc., etc.), I have regretted the decision ever since.

Here is what I missed.

What’s spinning: all songs considered

image

I love listening to NPR's All Songs Considered
and this April 19th, 2007 edition featuring Feist and Bjork is great.
If you like eclectic alternative music from all over the World,
check out the archives and listen to hours of music
and insightful commentary by host Bob Boilen.

experimental radio

Ira Glass and cohorts brilliant radio show
This American Life
is one of my favorite diversions while at the workbench.
Every engrossing episode is archived and available online,
so you can listen whenever you like.
I recommend checking out the Our Favorites page
where the staff has chosen their favorite episodes.
Every single one is a gem, but
House on Loon Lake, Babysitting, and Telephone
are great for starters.

what’s spinning: classic Cure

I first heard concert-the cure live
when I was a high school student fortunate enough to be
living/studying/traveling throughout Brasil, South America.
It is a piece of music that, to my surprise, is still one of my favorites
and frequent background music in my studio and my life.

It sounds especially nice played extremely loud on my
very old-school studio stereo.
I apologize to all the lawyers who quietly office in my building...
but that's just the way it goes.

The Decembrists, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Cat Power, Arcade Fire, Paul Simon, Wilco, Sleater Kinney, Sonic Youth, New Pornographers, Belle and Sabastian, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah...and on and on the list goes.

Give it a listen.

New Collections

We have added many new collections to our online selection; such as diamond, ice, faith, wedding, frost...to name a few. Visit the catalog page to see them all.

What's spinning-
Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures is perfect for this rainy Sunday.

As with many of the Joy Division albums,
Peter Saville's
cover art is as striking as the music.
