What’s Spinning: Metric

In honor of the 2010 Winter Olympics the Canadian band Metric's 2009 release Fantasies has been on heavy rotation this weekend in the circle studio; I must have listened to it about a dozen times yesterday. If your a fan of indie new wave check them out, they are impossibly addictive.

what’s spinning: Vampire Weekend

I'm a big fan of Vampire Weekend...their first album was on super heavy rotation in the circle studio and the newly-released second album is even better. Check out this little interview/concert vid from Pitchfork:TV's Juan's Basement series, it's pretty cool.

SXSW

image

National Public Radio's fantastic All Songs Considered website always has something interesting going on, but they've outdone themselves with a new collection of concerts from Austin, Texas' famously-cool South by Southwest festival. Check out circle studio faves R.E.M. (supporting their new album due out April 1st), Yo La Tengo, Vampire Weekend and My Morning Jacket...to name but a few.

what’s spinning: Vampire Weekend

image

It's been awhile since I've purchased any new tunes, but after hearing Vampire Weekend live on NPR's World Cafe I went ahead and made the plunge. What a fantastic debut...a little Talking Heads, a little Zumpano, maybe some Feelies and some choppy African Paul Simon Graceland-esque guitar and there you have it. It's been on heavy rotation in the circle studio ever since I received it on Saturday (I think I actually listened to it four times in a row yesterday...very infectious).

what’s spinning: Bob Mould

image

Every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas I am barely able to leave my workbench and that means I listen to a ton of music. It's a great time to pan the archives for a forgotten gem and today's shiny pick is Bob Mould's classic and one of my all-time favorites, Workbook. This album, his first after leaving the iconic Husker Du, is one of those rare albums that I remember exactly when and where I was when I gave it a first listen. Mr. Mould also has the has the distinction of playing the three loudest concerts that I've ever attended. If you're looking from a flawless jewel from the past, try Workbook.

what’s spinning: All Songs Considered

image

One of my favorite on/off line music venues, NPR's All Songs Considered, has recently undergone an extreme makeover significantly increasing their cool factor. Delve into hours and hours of live concerts (my favorite feature), in-studio sessions, news, interviews, video sessions, etc., etc., etc. Where else can you hear entire concerts from artists as diverse as Arcade Fire, Bjork, Lily Allen, Okkervil River, The Ponys, Spoon, and New Pornographers absolutely free?...you tell me...you tell me.

what’s spinning: KEXP 90.3

image

For the last week I've been updating our brand new Trunkt portfolio and listening to hours of Seattle's alternative public radio station, KEXP. Check out the KEXP website where you can listen to their live program stream, delve into their in-studio performance archives, or listen to a past favorite DJ's show (the DJ's actually pick their own playlists, believe it or not)...very cool. Email-in your request and give it a listen.

what’s spinning: Luna

image

I'm just finishing up a few new pieces which are to be included to the upcoming winter collection, so I've been glued to the workbench for the last couple of weeks. It just occurred to me this morning that I've listened to Luna's debut album Lunapark in its entirety about 100 times in the last few days and I still can't bring myself to take it out of the current studio rotation. Luna is one of the bands that I loved from the beginning and have always gone back to over the years, but was never fortunate enough to see play live. If you're interested, you cannot go wrong with any of their albums, but I still love this debut and their masterpiece follow-up Bewitched the best.

what’s spinning: NPR Live

image

I've been re-visiting one of my favorite online music venues after some time away and it seems I've missed much. NPR's Live Concert Series has an amazing collection of live concerts from artists as varied as Bjork, The Shins, The Black Angels, Apples in Stereo, Modest Mouse, Lily Allen, Arcade Fire, and many other circle studio faves...the list just goes on and on and on. Be sure to check out Spoon, New Pornographers and Okkervil River in the next few weeks.

what’s spinning: Interpol

image

I am currently having a problem shaking Interpol's latest release, Our Love To Admire. It was one of those albums that, on first listen seemed just "not bad," but after repeated listenings has enveloped me. I'm a fan of this New York City foursome's other work, so I knew I'd eventually come around, but come on, give me a break...
Of course, I also love the album art. Check out the very cool Interpol website to see more from the series of photos from New York's Natural History Museum.

what’s spinning: Spoon

image

The newest release from Spoon has been on super-heavy rotation in the circle studio for the last week. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is a perfect collection of poppy gems that you can't get out of your head. If you've heard about this Austin band in the last couple of months (this album has been highly rated by every publication that I can think of), but have yet to purchase any of their music try this album or their classic Gimme Fiction from 2005...you won't be disappointed.

whats spinning: New Order

image

Ah yes, time to blow a little dust off the debut New Order album, "Movement." I'm actually old enough to have been a Joy Division fan who followed right along into their New Order morph...now that's truly old school. And what's worse, I had this album on vinyl.
Even if your not a fan of the music, you may enjoy the cutting-edge album art of graphic artist Peter Saville, one of my favorites. Check out Mr. Saville's website here.

what’s spinning: Wilco

image

I've always been a huge fan of Wilco from their first album to their brand-new Sky Blue Sky. If you're a fan as well, then check out this interview and in-studio performance on NPR's great World Cafe with host David Dye. Give it a listen here.

what’s spinning: BAD

image

I'm feeling a bit nostalgic today
so I'm revisiting some of my favorites from way, way back
like this debut from Big Audio Dynamite.
Mick Jones groovies-up his Clash sound and tosses in
some inspired sampling.

And don't let the 1985 release date deter you,
this sonic gem sounds surprisingly fresh.

what’s spinning: The Apples In Stereo

image

I think I've listened to New Magnetic Wonder,
the highly-recommended latest by The Apples In Stereo,
about ten times this weekend.
Wonderful...I love albums where each song
sounds like it's from a different band yet remains
groovily coherent.
